Are electric estate cars the future of family travel? From Vauxhall to MG, explore the best models on the road.

Despite the SUV and crossover craze across the automotive sector at the moment, there’s a resurgence on the horizon for the estate car but electrified for the new era.

With electric SUVs aplenty, the electric estate is catching the eye for its blend of spaciousness and improved aerodynamic efficiency, which is all-important for extending the all-important EV range.

Vauxhall 

Vauxhall UK has set itself out as being electric first, and the Vauxhall Astra Electric Sports Tourer is symbolic of this. It gives you generous space and the same efficient powertrain as its hatchback counterpart. Sharing its underpinnings with the Peugeot e-308 SW, this model brings Vauxhall’s vision of an electric estate to life.

It’s a direct challenge to conventional estate cars, offering an electric ride without sacrificing any of the practicality or style. It features a 114kW Electric motor with 158PS, a 54kWh battery and a range of 256 miles. 

Peugeot

Arriving alongside the Vauxhall, Peugeot’s e-308 SW merges style with sustainability, featuring equivalent battery and motor specifications for an equally impressive range. 

The Peugeot e-308 SW offers a stylish design and practical electric motoring with a range of 258 miles. It’s the epitome of French elegance in electric form and it is a little smaller and lighter than many of its competitors, making it great for the UKs roads.

Peugeot also has the 508 SW as a plug-in hybrid version.

Porsche 

The Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo ​ is situated towards the luxury end of the market and can be bought for £80,200 and has a range of up to 305 miles. This Porsche offers a high-performance electric estate that blends sportiness with practicality. This is a great vehicle for those seeking luxury and with electric efficiency. 

The Porsche Taycan estate offers a thrilling performance, high speed, high comfort and high tech.

MG Motors

The MG 5 SW EV has been the only mainstream electric estate for quite a while. This great electric estate is available for £30,995 and gets you a range of up to 249 miles. 

This electric estate car has been leading the revolution since 2020. The vehicle offers exceptional value, range, and space and proves that electric estates are here to stay. 

The MG 5 offers a commendable mix of space and value. With a range of 250 miles and a rapid charging time, it sets a high standard for family-friendly electric motoring.

These have been tried and tested by Cleevely Motors in their fleet and their vehicles have run up to 120k, saving the company about half in costs from comparative ICE running. They have great reliability, with almost 50k miles between tyre replacements (when used mainly on motorways,) and state of charge reports show a potential to last over 250-300k miles.

Volkswagen 

Expected: 2024, Expected Range: 382 miles.

Expected: 2024, Expected Range: 362 miles.

BMW  i5 Touring ​ electric venture into the estate world promises the hallmark of luxury and space, expected to mirror the saloon’s performance and range, making family outings more electric than ever. 

The electric incarnation of the BMW 5 Series Touring, expected in 2024, promises nearly 350 miles of range and brings electrification to the executive estate segment. It’s poised to continue the 5 Series legacy with a modern electric twist.

Audi

Expected: 2024, Expected Range: 450 miles. 

Audi Q6 E-tron’s answer to electric estates, the A6 Avant e-tron, is set to debut with groundbreaking range and charging capabilities, posing a formidable challenge to BMW’s offering. 

The long-standing rivalry with BMW’s 5 Series continues into the electric age. With fast charging and a potential range exceeding 400 miles, the A6 Avant e-tron will set new benchmarks for electric estates.

Plug-in Hybrids
