Get ready for an adventure of a lifetime as we follow an all-electric Nissan Ariya from the North Pole to the South Pole, exploring some of the world’s most spectacular destinations and pushing the limits of sustainable travel.

EV in the desert

A modified Nissan Ariya will be setting off on a world-first EV expedition from the Magnetic North Pole to the South Pole, covering over 17,000 miles over 10 months. The vehicle features an 87kWh battery pack and a claimed range of up to 319 miles on a full charge.

A couple from Aberdeen, Chris and Julie Ramsey, are taking on an epic adventure that will put their relationship and their eco-credentials to the test, powered by solar and wind energy. No petrol is required!

Starting off at the Magnetic North, the couple will travel through Canada, the United States, South America, and all the way down to the South Pole, facing minus temperatures and harsh terrain along the way. But they’re not alone in their journey, as they will be accompanied by their trusty wind turbine and double solar device that will power the car throughout their 10-month journey.

However, with extreme off-road modifications, heavy long-travel off-road suspension, and chunky 39-inch tires, the range figure will be reduced. The battery will also be affected by sub-zero temperatures and will need to be charged using a renewable energy unit, which includes wind turbines and solar panels, that will be hauled by the vehicle.  the couple will be driving a modified Nissan Ariya, fitted with heavy long-travel suspension and 39-inch tyres, as well as a launch pad for a drone, an espresso machine and a weather station.

The journey will involve crossing ice fields, deep snow, steep mountain climbs, and inhospitable desert dunes, with temperatures ranging from minus 30 degrees to exceeding plus 30 at times. Chris and Julie, the adventurous couple behind this epic journey, are determined to showcase the capabilities of electric vehicles in extreme conditions and accelerate the adoption of battery cars.

The trip aims to dispel common myths about electric vehicles and showcase their capability in extreme environments. And if that’s not enough to impress you, they’ve also fitted the car with large tyres to cope with the rough terrain and a drone launcher to capture stunning footage of their journey.

The expedition is expected to start in March, with a shakedown test in Canada before the couple heads north, ending their journey in January 2024 at the South Pole. It’s going to be a monumental test of their endurance and potentially their tolerance for each other as they spend an estimated 12 to 13 hours per day in the car together.
